Training Camp Day 5
Training Camp Day 5
This week is flying by way too fast. I’m not ready to go back to Calgary and back to the realities of adulthood and having to work - the struggle of trying to balance workouts around shifts while maintaining somewhat of a social life and actually getting to enjoy my summer (potentially my last summer off for the next 2 years). Physio school consists of two and half years of solid school. Obviously all I want is to get in but at the same time it is a little bittersweet knowing that I won’t be able to spend as much time outdoors during the summer and may not be in the same city as my dog (man I miss Sadie).
We drove out to Zion and then biked around, exploring the park. It was ridiculously beautiful. I would love to go back some day and hike through the trails. It made me pretty stoked about going back to Calgary and exploring Kananaskis with Miss Sadie (have I mentioned that I kind of really miss her). We biked up to the tunnel and then got to descend back down (I’m starting to love descending and pushing my speed on the turns). I used to be pretty hesitant about picking up too much speed but I’m starting to take more risks (cue foreshadowing). We then took another road and biked up to the Weeping Rock. On our descent back to the vans it started to downpour. I normally kind of really like biking in the rain (I know, weird) but only when I am dressed properly and not in a pack where the wheel in front of me is flinging up so much water I start to drown.
Soaked and freezing, we quickly loaded up our bikes and drove into Hurricane for lunch. We had seen a wild turkey in it’s natural habitat at Zion and for some reason it made me really crave a turkey sandwich. Guess what I had for lunch? Carnivore for life.
Once we got back to our condos Emma, Soph and I decided to head out for a fun spin (with Coach Kyle’s approval) to explore St. George. We biked out to a paved pathway that took us through the different parks. It felt so good to be out on my bike, exploring new trails and enjoying the native Utah landscape. Near the end of our spin Emma pulled out her Go Pro to take some sweet videos of us. I was in the lead going through a tunnel and unfortunately did not realize that there was a sharp, blind turn coming out of it. I was going into it way too fast and ended up skidding out. My first thought: omg is my bike okay? Second thought: omg are my unicorn cycling shorts okay? Third thought: I guess I should see if I’m okay. Good news - My shorts are okay! Also I am completely fine except for a slightly bruised hip. My bike is completely fine except my right handlebar - there is a small scratch and it is slightly bent in. Functionally fine but aesthetically not so much. Easy fix though.
After our spin we joined our team for a quick mobility session before dinner. I spent the night catching up on a bunch of work and attempting to figure out my schedule for the next week. I have decided to go down to part time at Sporting Life (super grateful for their continued support of my athletic endeavours), am going to go back to the golf course, and continue coaching. Three jobs and training up to 20hrs of week. Why do I do this to myself. We shall see how it goes. Currently attempting to stop thinking about it and overanalyzing/stressing myself out. Check back tomorrow for my recap of day 6.
